America believes that Ukraine will not join the EU without the release of Tymoshenko
The US Secretary of the State Victoria Nuland reminded the Ukrainian authorities that the release of Yulia Tymoshenko remains an unfulfilled condition for the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.
Nuland noted that in the process of preparation for the signing of the Agreement Ukraine has adopted 18 draft laws which make the country closer to Europe. But according to the agreements Ukraine still has to make three important steps: to adopt the reform of the law-enforcement legislation and the reform of the electoral legislation, and to release Yulia Tymoshenko from prison in order to provide her with medical treatment.
Nuland remarked that the US considers "any forms of pressure" on the countries of the Eastern Partnership unacceptable, and that it can be considered as violation of the OSCE principles. In particular, she mentioned “the pressure of Russia”.
“The Eastern Partnership is a step toward a long-term vision for more integrated economic and political space, stretching from Lisbon to Donetsk,” she added.
Let us remind that signing of the Association Agreement of the European Union with Ukraine is directly dependent on the release of ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko. If the politician from the opposing party is not released within a month, the Agreement will not be signed in Vilnius. Till today the Ukrainian government remains at odds over making an exception for Tymoshenko and to provide permission for her treatment abroad; scheduled and unscheduled sessions of the parliament regarding this issue have failed.
By a strange coincidence today the opposition reported that Tymoshenko got sick in prison.
