Law on regional languages cancelled
Today the Verkhovna Rada has cancelled the Kivalov-Kolesnichenko law «On state language policy».
During the Parliament session the people's Deputy from the faction of «Batkivshchyna» Vyacheslav Kyrylenko stated that the act of Kivalov-Kolesnichenko was adopted in flagrant violation of rules and contraried to the Constitution of Ukraine.
Law granted the Russian language official status in some regions of Ukraine, approved in July 2012. Belarusian, Armenian, Karaite, Polish, Romany, Slovak, Hungarian, Ruthenian, German, Moldovan, Gagauz and some other were assigned as regional being languages of national minorities.
The state language, according to the bill, was proclaimed Ukrainian.
