The initiative with the UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine is counterproductive - Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the initiative with the UN General Assembly resolution, which confirms territorial integrity of Ukraine, counterproductive. The agency emphasizes that Kiev authorities and foreign "advocates", who represent their interests, try to distort the essence of alarming processes, ongoing in the country.
The resolution, adopted on March 27 and having recommendatory character, states that "the referendum, conducted in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol on March 16, 2014, has no legal force and cannot serve as the basis for any change of the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol".
"100 members of the General Assembly voted for adopting the resolution, 11 voted against, including Armenia, Belarus and Russia. 58 more delegations, including China, abstained from voting," is reported at the UN website.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia commented that "the persistence that is worthy of better application, with which Kiev authorities and foreign "advocates", who represent their interests, try to distort the essence of alarming processes, ongoing in the country, causes nothing but regret".
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia emphasizes that "all unspent potential of propaganda machine of the "cold war" times has been fully employed to shift the focus away from the deepest domestic policy crisis in Ukraine and impose the responsibility for the escalation of the tension upon the Russian Federation".
The commentary states that "the results of brazen interference of several western countries in the affairs of Ukraine are obvious: anti-constitutional change of power in Kiev, destruction of the state governance system, including at the regional and municipal levels, incapacity of the law enforcement agencies, debauch of extremists and faschist-minded elements, mass violations of human rights, threat to safety of national and lingual minorities, further aggravation of social and economic situation".
The ministry noted that "a wide dispersion of positions of the UN member countries, big number of those abstained from and not present during the voting became an expressive testimony of rejection of one-sided interpretation of the events, ongoing in Ukraine".
"Herewith, it is known what kind of brazen pressure, up to political blackmail and economic threats, was exercised upon several member states to make them vote affirmatively," says the commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
The authority has noted that "the counterproductive initiative with the resolution of the General Assembly will only complicate assistance with settlement of the domestic policy crisis in Ukraine".
"We call upon those participants of the international community, who have constructive disposition and think independently, to direct the efforts at real assistance with stabilization of the situation in this county and to demonstrate respect of the results of a free expression of popular will of the Crimean populace, which has already played its historical role and is useless to dispute," says the commentary of the foreign-policy authority.
It's worth reminding that 96.77 percent of the residents of the peninsula voted for reunification of the Crimea with Russia.
