Lenin monuments knocked down in Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava and Chernigov (Video)
For the past day, people destroyed three Lenin monuments on the central squares of Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava and Chernigov. The police did not intervene.
In Poltava, the monument was taken down using a truck and rope, in the presence of many people. The citizens first warned the authorities about the need to remove the monument but then set to the work themselves.
In Dnepropetrovsk, protesters needed almost 7 hours to take down the monument. It was sawed, chipped and finally pulled down using two trucks. The crowd of thousands of people was singing the anthem and shouted “Glory to Ukraine!” At first, a group of young people tried to prevent removing the statue. Someone even fired and was wounded.
Another Lenin was taken down fast enough from the pedestal in Chernigov, with the help of rope thrown over the neck. Young communists tried to prevent the destruction of the monument, coming to its defense wielding batons, but they were pushed back. Earlier, the morning session of the City Council did not approve removal of the monument.
