Obama: Ukraine needs elections and a unity government
US President on Wednesday commented the events in Ukraine. He says he does not perceive Ukraine as a “cold war chessboard”.
“My hope is at this point that a truce may hold... ultimately the government is responsible for making sure that we shift towards some sort of unity government, even if it’s temporary. That allows us to move to fair and free elections so that the will of the Ukrainian people can be rightly expressed without the kinds of chaos we’ve seen on the streets,” Obama said at a press conference on Wednesday, reports RIA Novosti news agency.
The US President disagrees with notion that the crisis in Ukraine is a reflection of confrontation between Washington and Moscow.
“Our view is not to see it as some Cold War chessboard where we are in competition with Russia” Obama said.
