US hockey team defeats Russia in shootout
The first match between the contenders for an Olympics medal in men’s hockey has completed. So far, in the group stage.
The main match of the day in the men's hockey tournament was held in Group "A". The Sochi ice was hot - the hosts of the Games played with the US team. The Bolshoi Sports Palace was filled to the brink. Some 12,000 spectators wanted to watch the game. Among them - Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. The home team started better, scoring the first goal in the middle of the second period. Pavel Datsyuk got a pass between two defenders, took the puck on a wrong arm and passed it right by the US goalkeeper.
Towards the end of the period, Russian national team was outnumbered, as Alexander Radulov received a 2 minute penalty. The score was evened out by the US striker Cam Fowler. While in the majority, the US team attacked. The attack was completed by Joe Pavelski.
Russia responded with a beautiful goal by Pavel Datsyuk. Then there was a well-placed shot of Fedor Tyutin. But this goal of the Russians was disallowed as at the time of the shot, the gates of the US team were slightly shifted from standard position. The game shifted into overtime, which also failed to identify the winner. The shootout series lasted long. In the end, the decisive goal was implemented by TJ Oshie. 3:2 - the US team victory. They are already in the quarterfinals, while Russia has to play the Slovakia team tomorrow.
