The best 2013 picture named
A picture showing African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city at night won the famous World Press Photo competition. The migrants attempt to capture a signal to call their relatives.
The author of the image is the US photographer John Stenmeyr. The picture shows African men on the shore of Djibouti city at night, raising their phones in an attempt to capture an inexpensive signal from neighbouring Somalia’s tenuous link to relatives abroad.
“It’s just people who are trying to call their loved ones,” said the photographer.
Thousands of Africans try to reach Europe or the Middle East, seeking a better fortune, hundreds die in transit.
The competition received almost 100,000 images.
World Press Photo is the most prestigious international contest held among the world’s photojournalists since 1955 in Amsterdam.
