Most Russians approve dispersing protests in Ukraine

Majority of Russian citizens approve forceful dispersal of protests in Ukraine, according to the results of a survey conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM). According to the survey, more than half (55%) of the respondents “condemn radical” protesters, “who use stones and Molotov cocktails.”

Another 26% said that they feel “antipathy” towards them, other 15% — “disappointment”, writes “Correspondent” magazine. Every tenth “distrusts” the behavior of the demonstrators, the same amount of people are “indifferent”. Only 1% of the respondents admitted “sympathy”, “respect” or “trust” towards the protesters.

VTsIOM also asked about the assessment of the actions of “Berkut” riot police, who “constrain the radical protesters”. 59% of respondents believe that the “Berkut” is “just doing its job”. Another third of respondents believe that “Berkut” “saves the country from division, dive into chaos and anarchy”. Only 5% of respondents answered that “Berkut” “protects the criminal regime, beats up ordinary people and violates human rights”.

The poll was conducted on February 1-2 among 1,600 people in 42 regions of Russia.
