Authorities and opposition agreed on restoration of Kiev district councils
On February 4, during Kiev City Council meeting, city leadership and the opposition agreed on the need to restore Kiev district councils.
As Kiev branch of “Batkivschyna” reports, People’s Deputy Yuriy Odarchenko prepared a draft decision of the Kiev City Council on renewing the district councils in the capital.
The relevant document “On administration of districts in the city of Kiev” proposes to establish 10 district councils, scheduling the relevant elections for the last Sunday of 60 days from the date of this decision. The document proposes to determine the amount of Council members as the maximum possible number of deputies according to the number of district residents (for districts with up to 250,000 residents — 60 deputies, more than 250,000 — 76 deputies).
Under the current law, half of this number will be elected by multi-member constituency (via party lists), and half — by majority constituencies, to be determined by the respective district election commissions within each district. According to Odarchenko, district councils would ensure proper management of Kiev districts, also promoting the rights of local communities to local government.
