US threatens Ukraine with sanctions, demands to withdraw riot police from Kiev
Caitlin Hayden, a representative of the US National Security Council at the White House, said that the US urges Ukrainian authorities to stop violence and withdraw the troops from the capital of Ukraine.
Authorities were unable to “recognize the legitimate claims of his people” and thus are responsible for what is happening, says the statement signed by Hayden and published on the website of the US Embassy in Kiev.
“The increasing tension in Ukraine is a direct consequence of the government failing to acknowledge the legitimate grievances of its people. Instead, it has moved to weaken the foundations of Ukraine's democracy by criminalizing peaceful protest and stripping civil society and political opponents of key democratic protections under the law,” reads the statement.
The representative demanded the authorities to start talks with the opposition and cancel the “anti-democratic laws” passed by Parliament on January 16, otherwise the US will impose sanctions.
