Stockholm refuses to bid for 2022 Winter Olympics
Stockholm refused to compete for the 2022 Winter Olympics, stated Moderate Party, the leaders in the ruling coalition “Alliance for Sweden”.
In the statement the party said that organization of the event will require large investments in construction of new sports facilities that will be unnecessary after the completion of the Games, Reuters reports.
According to Sveriges Radio, previously similar statements were heard from Christian Democrats, the Left Party and the Liberal Party (these parties are not the country’s leaders but they all are presented in the Swedish Parliament; the Liberals and the Christian Democrats belong to the "Alliance for Sweden" while the left - to the red-green opposition coalition).
In November 2013, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that six cities will compete for the 2022 Olympics. After Stockholm’s withdrawal, five candidates continue to fight for the right to organize the competitions: Beijing, Oslo, Almaty, Lvov and Krakow.
The Capital of 2022 Winter Olympics will be announced on July 31, 2015.
