US imposes sanctions against Ukraine
The US Senate adopted a resolution supporting the Ukrainian people and their right to an independent and democratic future, writes Jeffrey Payette, US Ambassador to Ukraine, on his Twitter page.
"Last night, the US Senate adopted a resolution supporting the Ukrainian people," quotes Podrobnosti news agency the Ambassador.
The resolution notes that "in case of further state violence against peaceful demonstrators the President and Congress should consider whether to apply targeted sanctions, including visa restrictions and freezing the assets of those responsible for the violence or ordering the violence."
The resolution also calls for the prevention of violence and a national dialog. The draft resolution has been submitted to US lawmakers on December 18, 2013.
The Senate also "condemns the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to use violence against peaceful demonstrators on November 30, December 1 and December 11, 2013 and calls for the immediate prosecution of those responsible for this and for the release of all detained peaceful demonstrators."
