About 3,000 Ukrainian children are autistic
Some 3,000 of Ukrainian kids — about 1% of the total number — suffer from autism, informs Igor Martsenkovsky, Nontenured Chief Child Psychiatrist at the Ministry of Health.
“Now the population is growing. I can say that autism affects about 1% of the pediatric population. Officially, if I’m not mistaken, there are about 3,000 registered children.”
According to the expert, the number of children diagnosed with autism has been growing every year for the last decade. However, as child psychiatrist stressed, this does not mean that the country is on the brink of epidemic: “Over the last decade the diagnostic level has been increasing by almost 30-40% annually. But it is not an epidemic, we are simply learning to diagnose these disorders.”
